In 2003/2004 67 people died and nearly 4000 suffered
a serious injury as a result of a fall from height in
the workplace.
Falls from height are the most common cause of fatal injury
and the second most common cause of major injury to employees,
accounting for around 15% of all such injuries.
In April the new Work At Height Regulations 2005 came into
force outlining the duties Employers have to protect their
workforce from falls from height.
The regulations require dutyholders to ensure: All work
at height is properly planned and organised. Those involved
in work at height are competent. The risks from work
at height are assessed and appropriate work equipment
(PPE) is selected and used and that this equipment is
properly inspected and maintained. (Source - HSE website)
